Use it to pick a random letter for a game, to break a tie, to choose where a round starts, or just to land somewhere you would not have chosen yourself. Every letter it lands on opens the lists on this site that begin with it, so the spin goes somewhere instead of stopping at the letter.
How to use it
- Press Spin the wheel, or tap the space bar.
- Turn letters off if you do not want them. The presets cover vowels and consonants, or tap individual letters in the grid.
- Switch on No repeats to work through the alphabet without the same letter twice, and raise Letters per spin to draw up to five at once.
- When the wheel stops, the panel underneath fills with lists that start with that letter.
Playing the categories game
The classic party version needs a letter, a list of categories and a timer, and the tool has all three. Agree the categories first, spin for a letter, then start the clock and race to name something in every category beginning with that letter. When the round ends the tool shows what you could have said, pulled from the lists on this site. It is the same shape as the boxed game sold as Scattergories, and it works just as well with a pen and a sheet of paper.
Categories come from this site’s own topics rather than a fixed printed list, so no two rounds have to look alike. Shuffle for a fresh hand of eight.
Which letters are hard?
In English the awkward ones are J, Q, V, X and Z — there are far fewer common words behind them, which is exactly why they make a round interesting. Turn on Hide hard letters if you would rather keep them out. If you want to see how thin they really are, compare adjectives that start with Q with adjectives that start with X, or look at African animals that start with Z.
FAQ
Is it really random?
Yes. The letter is drawn with crypto.getRandomValues, the browser’s cryptographic random number source, and the draw is rejected and retried if it would fall in a biased range. The wheel is then animated to land on the letter that was already chosen, so what you see is what was drawn.
Can I remove letters I do not want?
Yes. Tap any letter in the grid to switch it off, or use the vowels, consonants and hard-letter presets. Switched-off letters stay on the wheel, greyed out, so you can still see the whole alphabet.
Does it include Y?
Yes, Y is on the wheel as a normal letter. It is not counted as a vowel by the vowels preset, which selects A, E, I, O and U only.
