What is in each chart

  • One page: all 26 letters on a single sheet, with a name line at the bottom. Good for a desk, a folder or the fridge.
  • Big cards (5 pages): six letters per page, large enough to read from across a room. Cut the cards apart for a wall display. The last page has a “Letters I Know” tracker that children color in as they learn each letter.
  • With words: each tile shows the letter, a picture and the word, so children connect the letter to its sound and its spelling.
  • Pictures only: letter and picture with no word. Use it for practice: ask the child to name each picture and say the sound it starts with.
  • Letters only: uppercase and lowercase letters with no pictures, for handwriting reference and letter recognition.

Every letter is shown in uppercase and lowercase, in a font designed for children learning to read. The lowercase a and g match the way children are taught to write them.

How to print

  1. Choose your chart and click Download PDF.
  2. Open the file and print at 100% scale (or “Actual size”). On A4 paper, choose “Fit to page”.
  3. For wall cards, print on cardstock and laminate them so they last the school year.

Where possible each picture starts with the letter’s most common sound: A is for alligator, E is for elephant and O is for octopus. X has no common starting word, so the animal chart uses an x-ray fish and the everyday chart uses a xylophone.

Frequently asked questions

Are the charts free?

Yes. Every chart is a free PDF download with no sign-up. You can print as many copies as you need for home or classroom use.

What age are these charts for?

The picture charts suit preschool and kindergarten, roughly ages 2 to 6. The letters-only chart works as a handwriting reference through first and second grade.

Can I print the chart in black and white?

The charts are designed in color. They print in grayscale on a black-and-white printer, but the letters and pictures are easier to tell apart in color.

Is there a chart for the NATO phonetic alphabet?

Yes. The phonetic alphabet chart lists Alfa to Zulu with a picture and the pronunciation for every letter.

Where can I find more words for each letter?

atozdex has word lists for every letter, such as zoo animals from A to Z and breakfast foods from A to Z. Browse all of them from the A to Z index.
